Project Description: Auditions for The Gift of the Magi by O’Henry are taking place at Stage West Playhouse!
This is a touching and beautiful story of a young couple unable to afford presents for each other on their first Christmas together. Each sacrifices a treasure to provide a gift for the other but, in so doing, they work at almost tragically funny cross-purposes. This is a play about young love and the value of giving. Indeed, the Magi were wise—and their gifts were wise gifts, however foolish in the eyes of the practical.

Audition Details :
Everyone auditioning for a “role” will need to do cold readings from the script.
Everyone auditioning for a Caroler will need to sing 16 bars of a song a cappella, preferably a Christmas Carol.
Cast Details :
Narrator: Can be male or female and any age. He tells O.Henry’s story as written by the author with interaction with the characters of the story.
Della: Young (20s) and naive wife who is desperately in love with her husband. She is totally devoted to her husband and wants nothing more than to be loved by her him and be a devoted wife. Her innocence should be genuine and always forthcoming.
Jim: Young (20s-30s) businessman who is head over heels in love with his wife. He is hard working and wants nothing more than to give everything in the world to his lovely wife. He loves his wife’s sweet and kind disposition and sees her as an angel. He would do anything to make her happy.
Hair Salon Owner: Can be male or female and any age. This person should be a stern and savvy business person.
Mr. Hampton: Distinguished businessman (Jim’s boss) age 40 or older who is much more interested in making a profit than in Christmas or family needs...he’s all business and no pleasure.
Shop Clerk: Can be male or female and any age. This person is a salesclerk who would like to make as much money as possible on a sale, but has a heart of gold.
Carolers: We need 4-6 people of any age (including children age 10 & up). The Carolers will need to sing as a group and perform 5 carols during the production. The signing will be a cappella.
