Desiree Kantrim - Desiree Fine Arts

Artist Bio

Desiree was born on the border between France & Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1949, and has since lived and traveled all over the globe. Her art is as varied as her background. She earned a BFA degree from Meisterschule Offenbach/Main, earned a Master's degree in Linguistics and German Literature at the American University in D.C., and studied at the Corcoran Art Institute. She lived in the bush in Canada for 24 years and in the jungle by the ocean in Costa Rica for 12 years. In between, she married an Army man, raised a family, worked for the Pentagon Language Institute, ran several galleries, scaled the Himalayas all the way to Mount Everest Base camp, and recently traveled through Africa all the way from Cape Town to Cairo. She "retired" to Jacksonville in 2003 and has since been an active member of the community.

Artist Statement

Art has always been an integral part of my life. From kindergarten on I had a crayon or pencil in my hands, I potted and sculpted in clay, designed and wove textiles, and just of late concentrated mostly on my paintings. Having lived and traveled all over the globe. from Canada to Costa Rica and from Capetown to Kathmandu my art has been influenced and gone through many changes. Nature has always been a source of never-ending fascination and even my abstracts are often grounded in nature itself. Since moving to Jacksonville I have been a member of The Art Center COOP, the Orange Park Art Guild, JWS, and Somma, as well as The Jacksonville Artists Guild. My work has won many prizes and awards and has been featured in many groups and solo exhibitions, among them the Karpeles Museum, the Beaches Fine Arts Series, the Thrasher Horne Center, the JCA, and the "ART after Dark" exhibit as well as many private collections.
